UTHM’s Researchers Grabs The Gold Award

PWTC, Kuala Lumpur – The opening for Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) 2009 Research and Innovation Competitions began on a very exciting note, as the Bio-45D Machine, an invention by Tn. Hj. Mohd Salleh bin Tahar, En. Khairul Fahmi bin Ali and En. Mohd Kamil bin Ahmad Tajuddin from the Faculty of Technical Education was successful in being awarded two gold medals, one for Category A (Machinery) and more importantly being confered the ‘The Best Award’ for the Malaysian Technology Expo (MTE) 2009.

The panel of judges for the MTE 09 competition jointly decided to confer the research and innovation product, Bio-45D Machine the gold award and ‘The Best Award’ as being the top 10 products exhibited from amongst 460 products competed at the 8th Malaysia Invention and Innovation Award 2009 in conjunction with the Malaysia Technology Expo 2009. The exhibition and competiton which constituted the numerous research and innovation outcomes from both the Public and Private Institutions of Higher Learning (IPTA/S) as well as various research agencies was held from the 19-21 February 2009 at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur and officially opened Yang Berhormat Tn. Hj. Fadillah bin Yusof, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Invovation Malaysia.

Motivated by the spirit and determination focused on resolving the problems of the local population within the area of Parit Raja that is renowned for the fried ‘krepek’ industry, the group of researchers led by Tn. Hj. Mohd Salleh Tahar invented the Bio-45D Machine aimed at resolving the issue of used cooking oil that is often discarded; by converting it into biodiesel fuel that can be used by the automotive industry. Consequently, this machine can serve to overcome the problem of river pollution around Batu Pahat due to accumulation of used cooking oil that has become a negative by-product discarded into drainage systems ultimately polluting the rivers. Thus, this Bio-45D Machine is seen as a huge relief by the local, Parit Raja ‘kerepek’ entrepreneurs who rely on this industry as one of their main source of economy.

Additionally, fellow UTHM researchers proved their excellence in producing research and innovation outcomes of a high commericalization quality by securing 3 silver awards and 8 bronze awards in the various categories that were contested. This achievement at MTE 09 is further evidence that the research and innovation outcomes at UTHM have a strong commercializable potential and are capable of having a realizable impact on the development of the local community and country at large. The community at UTHM are proud to acknowledge this recent achievement and would like to express their heartfelt congratulations and appreciation to all the researchers and inventors who participated at the MTE 2009. May the untiring efforts and strong determination shown by the researchers and inventors be an inspiration to the UTHM research and innovation community at large in order to further explore
