UTHM Researchers grabs 10 medals in PECIPTA'09

KLCC, Kuala Lumpur - UTHM recorded a success in the field of research and innovation when 10 of its researchers won 10 bronze medals in the 2009 International Expo of Research and Innovation for Institutions of higher learning (PECIPTA'09) which was held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from 8-10 Oktober 2009.

This bi-annual programme was officiated by YAB Tan Sri Muhyiddin bin Hj Mohd Yassin, the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia while the closing ceremony was officiated by YB Dato' Seri Mohamad Khaled bin Nordin, the minister of Higher Learning of Malaysia.

PECIPTA'09 received 465 research and innovation submissions from 19 public institutions of higher learning and 3 private institutions of higher learning. There were 23 gold medals, 93 silver medals and 93 bronze medals to be grabbed for 2 categories of products. They were:

i) products which have won prizes in 2008 and
ii)new products which have not submitted for any competitions or which have not win any prizes before. UTHM submitted 32 products, namely 17 for the category of products which have won prizes and another 15 of new products category.

The Pecipta'09 product submissions were categorized into 5 specialized areas namely Biosciences and Biotechnology, Health and Allied Sciences, Information and Communication Technology, Physical Sciences and Engineering and Social Sciences and Humanities. For the PECIPTA'09, UTHM submitted a product for the Biosciences and Biotechnology area, 2 products for the Information and Communication Technolog area, 27 products for the Physical Sciences and Engineering and 2 products for the Social Sciences and Humanities area.

Judging of the products wasa based on 5 criteria. They were novelty and inventiveness, usefullness, commercial potentialities, academic recognition status or intellectual property protection as well as presentation and demonstration.

The criteria for judging were indeed challenging but UTHM researchers managed ti emerge as winners of 10 bronze medals. The success proves that UTHM researchers'products and inventions are of commendable quality and can be commercialized.

PECIPTA'09 which also offered business matching prospects to both researchers and industries in their effort to commercialize products of research and innovation have shown that several industries are interested to commercialize a number of research and innovations of UTHM which were submitted for this exhibition.

Congratulation to all successful researchers who won medals in PECIPTA'09!. An appreciation also goes to the honourable Vice Chancellor who reserved some of his precious time to meet and give moral support to the participants and committe members who gave their full commitment in making PECIPTA'09 a great success.
