KLCC, Kuala Lumpur - UTHM recorded a success in the field of research and innovation when 15 of its researchers won 11 medals in the 2011 International Expo of Research and Innovation for Institutions of higher learning (PECIPTA'11) which was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from 13-15 September 2011.

This programme which is organized every two years, was officiated by YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled bin Haji Nordin, Minister of Higher Education, Malaysia while the closing ceremony was officiated by Y. Bhg. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Rujhan bin Mustafa, the Director General Department Of Higher Education, Higher Learning of Malaysia.

PECIPTA'11 received 390 research and innovation submissions from 20 public Universities, 2 private institutions, one Polytechnic and 21 secondary schools.  There were 41 gold medals, 40 silver medals and 66 bronze medals to be awarded for the two categories of products. They were:

1) Existing Product which have been participate and ever won prizes past year
     (MM).

2) New products which have not submitted for any competitions or which have
not win any prizes before. (MO)

UTHM submitted 15 products, eight for the MM category and 7 products for the MO category.

The Pecipta'11 product submissions were categorized into 5 specialized areas namely Biosciences and Biotechnology, Health and Allied Sciences, Information and Communication Technology, Physical Sciences and Engineering and Social Sciences and Humanities.

For the PECIPTA'11, UTHM submitted 2 products for the Biosciences and Biotechnology area, 2 products for the Information and Communication Technology area, 10 products for the Physical Sciences and Engineering and one product for the Social Sciences and Humanities area.

Judging of the products was a based on 5 criteria; novelty and inventiveness, usefulness, commercial potentialities, academic recognition status or intellectual property protection as well as presentation, and demonstration.
The criteria for judging were indeed challenging and we are proud that UTHM researchers were successful in obtaining 3 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 10 bronze medals. The success indicates that UTHM researchers' products and inventions are of commendable quality and has the potential to be commercialized.

PECIPTA'11 which also offered product pitching and business matching prospects to both researchers and industries in their effort to commercialize products of research and innovation have shown that several industries are interested to commercialize a number of research and innovations of UTHM which were submitted for this exhibition.

Congratulation to all successful researchers who won medals in PECIPTA'11!. Our appreciation also goes to the honorable  Dato' Ir. Wahab bin Suhaili, Board of Director UTHM, who reserved some of his precious time to meet and give moral support to the participants and committee members who gave their full commitment in making PECIPTA'11 a great success.
